What you'll need
- Vial content (e.g. 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, 100 mg, 500 mg)
- Diluent volume (mL of bacteriostatic water added)
- Target reference amount (mg or mcg) taken from the literature you are working from
- Syringe scale — a 1.0 mL graduated syringe is marked in 100 units, so 1 unit = 0.01 mL
Step-by-step
- Enter vial content (e.g. 10 mg)
- Enter diluent volume in mL (e.g. 2 mL)
- Calculator outputs concentration — e.g. 5 mg/mL or 5000 mcg/mL
- Enter target reference amount (e.g. 500 mcg)
- Calculator outputs volume to withdraw (e.g. 0.10 mL) and the equivalent units on a 100-unit graduated syringe (e.g. 10 units)
Sanity checks
- Doubling the diluent volume → concentration halves
- Doubling the target amount → withdrawal volume doubles
Common calculation mistakes
- mg vs mcg confusion — 1 mg = 1000 mcg
- Entering diluent volume in the wrong unit — the calculator uses mL only
- Assuming syringe "units" equal mg — units are a volumetric scale; the mass depends entirely on concentration
Tip
If the literature is written in mcg but your vial is labelled in mg, convert first (mg × 1000 = mcg), or let the calculator handle the conversion.
